Troubleshooting: Wireless connectivity issues impacting more than one system
Fuqua’s wireless coverage is designed to cover most public spaces at the Fuqua School of Business and R. David Thomas Center. Notable exceptions to the wireless coverage design are Classrooms A – G and the guest rooms at the Thomas Center. The wireless protocol used at Fuqua is 802.11b and 802.11g adapters will self adjust to the 802.11b speed as well.
Lack of wireless connectivity can be determined if you are not able to browse public web sites. News sites such as CNN.com or a popular web portal such as Yahoo.com are a good test to confirm if your system is able to reach the Internet.
Troubleshooting
There are several different areas that need to be checked on a laptop to ensure the lack of connection is not localized to one system. The areas below should be checked before escalation.
- Wireless card is turned off – Many laptops come equipped with a hardware ON/OFF switch, ensure that the switch is in the ON position for wireless access.
- Enable the wireless card – Click here for instructions on enabling your wireless card through Windows
- Release the IP address – Click here for instructions on how to release and renew your computers IP address to ensure that you have a Fuqua address.
- Using a proxy server – Some internet service providers utilize proxy servers for there connections. These proxies are only compatible through that ISP and not at other locations. Click here for instructions on how to disable a proxy server.
Alternatives
Fuqua’s wireless and wired networks are separate systems to allow easy wireless access for users while maintaining the highest level of data security for our workstations and servers. If there is a problem with the wireless network please alert the Technical Support Center via phone at 660-7878 or email at help@fuqua.duke.edu. If possible, please utilize workstations located in team rooms and computer labs until wireless access is restored
