Fuqua's MBA Student Computing Space There are now three types of PCs throughout our public space at Fuqua. The traditional WorkStation, which has not changed, the New ExpressStation and new Kiosk Systems. The various types of systems are designed to meet the needs of our students as well as visitors to the school. The improvements and modifications over Fall Break have produced more reliable systems with updated software and security. WorkStationsThe high performance PCs found in the 1 East Lab, 2 East Lab, Personal Printing Lab, Library Mezzanine and Team Rooms host the full suite of Office applications and tools. The IBM NetVista's have a 1 Ghz Pentium III processor, 256 Mb of RAM and a DVD/CD player. Users must login and authenticate in order to use the software on these machines. (New) ExpressStations The ExpressStations for Term 2 have been updated and modified to correct issues with Netscape Messenger. The result is a hybrid system that runs the Duke Mail client (Netscape Messenger) locally and all other applications from a Citrix server farm. Users will now have to login and authenticate just like the WorkStation. The ExpressStations are designed for quick walk-up use, for checking email and newsgroup postings. While users can access the full suite of Office applications and tools via Citrix, it is not intended to be a full WorkStation. Email attachments must be saved to the H: drive before opening. This will ensure a virus scan and prevent users from accidentally leaving these attachments on local hard drives. KioskStations In the East Entrance area, near the Admissions department, six PCs have been deployed as walk-up KioskStations. These PCs do not require login and authentication. Visitors to the Fuqua School of Business can use these PCs to access the Internet and web-based mail. Students are also welcome to use these PCs, however, there is no Duke Mail client (Netscape Messenger) available on the KioskStations. Duke Web Mail is available. In addition, students can access the full suite of Office applications and tools (except for Netscape) via Citrix. |
