From your office system, you have access to a sophisticated network of storage and applications. That space includes secure network drives that are archived and scanned for virus daily. Most of these FuquaNet resources can also be accessed remotely. However, to protect the data, Fuqua IT has implemented a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to give home and remote users a secure connection to their data. When using a VPN client, users can remotely connect to network drive space at Fuqua, including the G:, H:, I:, and J: drives.
There are 3 simple steps for creating this remote
access to your Fuqua data:
1. Install VPN software (Instructions
for installing and using VPN) 2. Connect to Fuqua using VPN
3. Map the drives you wish to access remotely (Instructions

The floppy disk has
a capacity of 1.44 MB. It is used for small file transfer and
archiving. |

The local disk (hard drive) can
have very large capacities. Most hard drives at Fuqua will
range from 6 GB (gigabytes) to 80 GB. The hard drive should
be used for running programs and storing file copies or non-essential
files since the hard drive is not backed u |

Some computers are equipped with a second
hard drive that will appear as the D: drive. This
may also be a partition on the main disk. |

If there is only one hard disk or one hard
disk partition the D: drive will be the first optical
drive in the computer. A DVD drive is capable of
reading disks in the DVD format and playing DVD movies with
the proper software. The current capacity of a writable DVD
disk is 4.7 GB. The D: may also be a standard CD-ROM drive
on some computers. |

A local CD-ROM drive can
read standard CDs such as software CDs, data, and music CDs. This
can also be a CD-RW (you should look at the exterior of the
drive) drive since Windows does not differentiate between the
drive types in Windows Explorer. The capacity of a writable
CD is 700 MB. |

Groups (G:) is a network drive that is stored on Fuqua’s Enterprise Storage Environment. This drive is commonly referred to as the G: Drive. For staff, the G: drive is their individual department drive. For faculty, the G: drive is open to all faculty members. This drive is backed up nightly. |

cifs.homedir (H:) is a network drive that is stored on Fuqua’s Enterprise Storage Environment. This drive is commonly referred to as the H: Drive and can only be accessed by the single user. Each member of Fuqua has their own H: Drive that can only be accessed with their use ID and password. This drive is backed up nightly. |

Everyone (I:) is a network drive that is stored on Fuqua’s Enterprise Storage Environment. This drive is commonly referred to as the I: Drive and can be accessed by every member of the Fuqua community. The I: Drive has been set up as a means of temporary file storage and sharing. The I: Drive is a useful way for members of faculty to share needed files with students or staff members. Original data should never be moved to the I: drive only copied there because the I: Drive is self-policing where all Fuqua community members have read, write and delete rights. The capacity is 10 GB. |

Facultydata (J:) is a network drive that is stored on Fuqua’s Enterprise Storage Environment. This drive is commonly referred to as the J: Drive and can be accessed by Fuqua faculty members. The J: Drive houses an Area folder with subfolders for each faculty concentration that are restricted to only members of that concentration. Also found on the J: Drive are a subfolder for centers containing centers like CIBER and CASE, course web site data and faculty web site data. This drive is backed up nightly. |

Your network drives (G:, H:, I: and J:) are
hosted on Fuqua’s Enterprise
Storage Environment. This device, named Galaxy, is Network
Appliance storage system. It is backed up daily, scanned for virus,
and protected against disasters. This is the safest and most secure
location for all of your critical data. Data written to local drives
is not recoverable in the event of a hard disk crash.
What are my options when working on-campus
at Fuqua?
While working on campus you have access files to files stored on:
- Local drives on your office PC (A:, B:, C:, D:, and E:)
- Galaxy (G:, H:, I: and J:)
What are my options for reaching my network drives when working off-campus?
By using Fuqua’s Virtual Private Network (VPN) and VPN client
software, such as FuquaNet @ Home/Mobile, you will have access to
files stored on Galaxy. The VPN client offers a secure connection,
or tunnel, through the Internet directly into Fuqua’s network.
It does not matter which Internet Service Provider (ISP) you are
using. ISPs such as Time Warner, BellSouth, Mind Spring, etc. have
been tested to work with Fuqua’s VPN. Connection through
the VPN is encrypted which offers security when transferring data
or
passwords via the Internet.
What are my options for reaching my office PC when working off-campus?
By leveraging the Remote Desktop function of Windows XP in conjunction
with the VPN client, you can access files and applications stored
on your office PC. You must have Windows XP running on your office
PC for this functionality to work. Then, from any mobile client PC
or laptop running Windows 2000 or Windows XP and an Internet connection,
you will be able to reach your office PC as if you were sitting in
front of that office PC. You can log in and see all of your applications,
mapped drives, local data, etc. You can even transfer data from your
office PC to your mobile PC. The Technical Support Center can help
you configure this and provide training for those that wish to use
this feature of Windows XP. Information

What are some guidelines and suggestions for data storage and usage?
We strongly recommend that you leverage Galaxy whenever possible
to protect your data. The built-in availability and backups that
comes with this resource is exceptional. Snapshots of your data are
available for you to restore in the event of an error is saving or
deleting files.
Your local PCs and/or laptops are not backed up automatically.
Therefore, we highly recommend that you periodically save data
to Galaxy (H: drive) and/or create an archive on CD or DVD.
DVD
burners are available for purchase for desktop PCs. The Technical
Support Center can help you choose and install a new DVD burner.
The storage capacity of a DVD burner is 4.7GB.
