As you know Duke experienced a wave of e-mails yesterday as a result of a new e-mail virus called "Mydoom". The virus was discovered on the Internet Monday. Some Fuqua client systems (student laptops and home systems) were infected. Distribution lists (mba1, mba2, everyone, etc.) at Fuqua were turned off until 11:30am this morning.

This dramatically reduced the number of e-mails distributed as a result of the virus. The virus was leveraging this mechanism to propagate itself. As of now things appear to be under control. However, some user systems may still be infected.

If you suspect that your system has been infected with this latest virus/worm, you should download the latest version of "Stinger" which is designed to clean your computer from this and other viruses. Stinger can be downloaded from this site: http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/. Be sure to restart your computer after cleaning your system with Stinger. In addition, you should update your virus definition files and run a scan of your system. If you have McAfee Virus scan software, follow these instructions: * First, check what level your virus definitions are at by right-clicking the shield in your system tray (lower right corner of screen) and selecting "About". It should be updated to revision 4319 created today (Jan 27, 2004)

  • If this is what your says, then you are up-to-date
  • Otherwise, you will need to get the latest update by right-clicking the shield again and choosing "Update Now"
  • If you happen to be on an older version of McAfee, you may not have this option. If so, there should be a magnifying glass icon near the shield icon. Double-click the magnifying glass icon, and you will see a list of tasks. Run the AutoUpdate" task by right-clicking it and choosing "Start" Don't be alarmed if it does not successfully connect and get the updates on the first couple of tries, as the many McAfee users are trying to get the updates today to protect their computers. We suggest that you keep trying until you get the update.

If you wish to learn more about this virus, you can visit the Network Associates Virus Information Library at this site: http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_100983.htm. If you have any questions about updating your anti-virus software, contact the Technical Support Center at tsc-help@fuqua.duke.edu.
