Many of you have received several virus-generated emails today. One such
email contains only the word "price" in the body.
The TSC has been monitoring these virus messages throughout the day. We
have investigated this virus and found that it is likely a variant of
the MyBagel virus.
As you may know, Duke's Office of Information Technology is responsible
for the service and support of all Duke mail servers. We have been in
contact with OIT and have confirmed that these viruses are identified
and quarantined when the mail server encounters them. You may continue
to receive messages that indicate that the Duke Email server has
quarantined the message. This is a good sign that the virus is not
currently a hazard in the Fuqua environment.
As a reminder, please remember that although the virus messages may
contain the email addresses of friends or coworkers, this does not mean
that that person is infected. Many viruses imitate, or "spoof", the
email addresses that it finds in the infected machines address books. So
we could all receive messages here at Fuqua from an infected machine
outside of the Fuqua or Duke email system.
As is always the case with these outbreaks, we continue to monitor the
situation and stay in close contact with Duke's Office of Information
Technology.
