Many of you may have heard about a major update being released this month by Microsoft to the Windows XP operating system software called "SP2". This is a brief note from Fuqua IT to advise you regarding our approach here at Fuqua regarding deployment of this newest OS update.

Microsoft will occasionally send out updates and patches to its operating systems in order to improve their stability and security. The TSC generally encourages all Fuqua users to maintain the best practice of setting your client system to receive "Automatic Updates" in order to maintain the security and stability of the Fuqua network. Windows XP Service Pack 2 ("SP2") is a major upgrade to the operating system. After doing research and considering potential interoperability issues, we have decided to delay this upgrade within the Fuqua Network environment.

Systems that are members of the Fuqua Domain will _not_ receive Windows XP SP2 automatically. We are blocking this update from occurring in the Fuqua environment until we have completed internal testing and research to assure that SP2 is fully compatible with key applications and the Fuqua environment.

NOTE: This blocking/delay for systems connected to the Fuqua Domain does not apply to systems such as faculty/staff laptops and some Fuqua home systems. These systems may safely be set to receive "Automatic Updates" and they will indeed receive the update when it is made available online by Microsoft later this month.

If you have any questions or concerns about this decision or ongoing research on this issue, please contact the TSC at 660-7878 or tsc-help@fuqua.duke.edu.

Thanks.
