New students are occasionally confused by the arrary of technology resources at Fuqua. Use this guide to insure that you are prepared to work productively in the Fuqua computing environment.

Contact the Technical Support Center ("TSC") if you need assistance with any of these items. The TSC Help Desk is located in W134, near the RJR Classroom, and is open from 7:30am - 5:30pm, Monday - Friday. You can also get help via phone (919-660-7878) or email (help@fuqua.duke.edu).

New Accounts: FuquaNet and DukeNet ID

All students must have official Duke and Fuqua accounts before they can be granted access to the Fuqua network.

Duke NetID - Your Duke NetID is a unique identifier used by Duke OIT for every duke student, including Fuqua students. The Duke NetID is also the first part of your "@duke.edu" email.

Learn about configuration of your email client

Fuquaworld - "FuquaWorld" is Fuqua's custom-built intranet/web portal. Your should bookmark the FuquaWorld link, as you will use it often. Your password will be the same as your Duke NetID password.

FuquaNet - Your FuquaNet login and password will give you access to computers on the Fuqua campus. These accounts also grant access to your network drives, computers in the main lab, and the online resources of the Ford Library.

Your initial FuquaNet password can be found in your profile in FuquaWorld. To find it, just log into FuquaWorld and click on the "My Profile" link on the upper right corner of the page.

The TSC recommends that you then change your FuquaNet password to match your Duke NetID/email password. The easiest way to do this is to log in to one of the machines in the Main Computer Lab, click on Control-Alt-Delete, and select the "Change Password" button.

Meeting Maker - Meeting Maker use has been discontinued in the Fuqua environment. Scheduling and calendaring functionality is provided by the the Duke Exchange serivice and the Microsoft Outlook email client.

Computer Requirement

You are required to have an english language version of Microsoft Windows Operating System and Microsoft Office 2007. The TSC recommends a system with no less than a Pentium 4 CPU and 2 GB of RAM, but your requirements may vary based on your choice of operating system.

A few students choose to use a Macintosh computer. This is permissable, but be aware that a Mac will not run 100% of the course-related software and may require a little extra effort and expense on the part of the student.

E-mail Options

The recommended stardard for email access is Microsoft Outlook 2007.

But Fuqua students should also be aware of other options for accessing email:

1. Outlook Web Access ("OWA") allows any user to access their email from any remote web browser in the world. The system is designed to offer top performance via Microsoft's own Internet Explorer web browser. However, other browsers also offer access via "OWA Light", a simple interface that offers efficient send and receive abilities, but less robust access to folders and calendar items.

2. Apple Mail is the most popular method for accessing Exchange accounts on Macintosh computers. However, the Apple Mail program supports access to your email inbox, but not to any of the calendaring functionality of Exchange. Full support of all exchange services in Apple Mail is expected with the release of the the next version of Mac OS X version 10.6 in late October.

3. The Microsoft Entourage Exchange client is also supported by the Duke Exchange system. The Entourage client supports all of the features of the Duke Exchange server. Entourage is one component of Microsoft's Office 2008 software package for the Mac.

FuquaWorld

FuquaWorld is the online web portal for the Fuqua community. FuquaWorld provides information and services that are used by all Faculty, Staff and Students at Fuqua. If you have not already done so, you should log into FuquaWorld and explore the site. You will be using this site on a regular basis as a student at Fuqua.

Network Drives

Each student has access to secure and redundant network storage. These "Network Drives" can be accessed from any laptop or remote desktop that is logged into the Fuqua VPN. Your personal network drive is often referred to as your "H: drive".

Printing

Printing services are available throughout Fuqua. Consult with your TSC technician if you are not able to print to your departmental printer.

Working from Home

Students frequently need to access Fuqua-related data from home. To learn how to do this, you will have to learn how to setup the Fuqua VPN on your home laptop or desktop. You will also want to learn how to acccess your network drive.
