Use an internet firewall
Fuqua recommends the use of the software firewall that comes built-in to all PC's running Windows XP Service Pack 2. To adjust the settings of your Windows Firewall, go to: Start-Control Panel-Security Center. You can quickly learn to adjust the firewall settings to suit your needs.
Install anti-spyware tools
"Spyware" type programs can have a significant negative impact on the performance of your computer. Fuqua now recommends the use of an anti-spyware program to mitigate these negative effects. The first-choice of the TSC technicians is the free and effective program, Adaware. Download and install Adaware (2.7 MB .exe file)
Clean your system
Cookies, temp files, registry settings and other artifacts of heavy use can accumulate on your system and slow down your PC. Use the free utility, "CCleaner" to remove these artifacts from your system. Download "CCleaner"
Get computer updates
If you manage your own computer, install updates as soon as they become available. It is recommended that you set your Windows XP system to download security updates automatically. For the latest Microsoft security patches, visit: http://www.microsoft.com/security/default.mspx
In addition, visit the Microsoft Windows Update page regularly at: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
Use up-to-date antivirus software
Duke's Office of Information Technology (OIT) recommends and provides antivirus software for Duke students, faculty & staff. The antivirus program currently recommended by OIT is McAfee Anitvirus. It is available for download from OIT's website: http://www.oit.duke.edu/site/software/mcafee.html
If you suspect that your system has been infected with one of the latest viruses/worms, McAfee AVERT Stinger can be used to clean your computer. Stinger can be downloaded from this site: http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ .
Be sure to restart your computer after cleaning your system with Stinger.
